The magazine’s rankings are based on a complex statistical analysis that examines whether a school’s students – including the least-advantaged – are performing better than expected for the average student in the state. …

The magazine, and its partner in the project, School Evaluation Services, looked at more than 21,000 public high schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Only 1,800 schools made the list.

Anaheim High is one of 24 Orange County schools that were recognized for their overall excellence. Of those 24 schools, five are from the Anaheim Union High School District, Oxford Academy in Cypress earned a Gold ranking; Cypress H.S. earned silver; and Anaheim H.S., Hope Special Education Center and Western H.S. earned bronze rankings. …

AHS Principal Ben Sanchez said the school’s student body, faculty and staff were jubilant when they heard the news. “This is tremendous honor and a testimony to the hard work and dedication of all who are involved in the education of AHS students.”

Sanchez noted that the evaluation process includes three steps that examine how well a school serves its entire student body (average students, disadvantaged students and college bound students). “This shows that we’re succeeding in our efforts to meet the educational needs of all of Anaheim High’s 3000-plus students,” he said.

I want to thank Steve Walker, the OTH group, and fellow officers and friends of my husband for all the support and loving memories of Jim. We are doing ok. Saturday will be difficult but Jim will be with us all to get us through this like he always has. I want you all to know his passing was relatively fast and somewhat painless which for me is the best blessing of all. Also, Jim and I had discussed organ donation. My husband has been able to help over 200 people (and their families) with his most generous donation.

It goes without saying, I will always miss my husband holding my hand or kissing me goodnight but he left me something that will be with me all my life, love in my heart and his wonderful friends and our family to check in on me once in a while to be sure all is well, this will make each day bareable.

I would like to share with you what I believe to be his last writing. The day I got home, I found this hand written page on his desk next to his glasses. To quote my husband “In police work we call that a clue” lol. I believe these are things he had learned or heard through his life that had touch him and he needed to share.

If you want to believe in something,

Then believe it.

Just because something isn’t true,

That’s no reason you can’t believe it.

Sometimes the things that may or may not be true

Are the things a man needs to believe in the most

1. People are basically good

2. Honor, courage & virtue mean everything

3. The power in money or the money in power mean nothing

4. Good always triumps over evil

5. True Love Never Dies

A man should believe in those things because those are the things worth believing in.

Again thank you so much for caring. Blessings for each of you over this holiday season and in the coming year.

Linda Watkins

I’m sure, like me, you all sit in absolute shock of this unbelievable news. We have lost an unwavering friend; a kind, loving, do anything for anybody guy; our “go-to” classmate that spent hours and hours of his own time making sure our ‘64 alumnae list was always kept up to date. Class of ‘64 was a priority with Jim–I, personally, couldn’t thank him enough for spending the time he did for all of us. He was one of the most selfless individuals I’ve met in my lifetime.

Apparently, services will be held next week in Idaho. As soon as I hear anything in this regard, I will pass it along. However, I thought possibly our breakfast group might want to have a memorial somewhere in O.C. in his honor? If any of you have any ideas for this, please pass them along–we can discuss this at our December breakfast. Also, please pass this sad news to anyone you know that is not on Don’s monthly ‘64 “breakfast list” (the names on this distribution list is those of you that Don Vary sends breakfast notices to).

May God rest his dear, kind soul, Jim will forever remain in our hearts.

Jim Watkins passed away today. I do not know much more than that. I learned it from a Facebook posting by Jackie Ray, and then a posting on Jim’s page by his son. As you all know, Jim was the heart and soul of AHS ‘64.
